The Draw: Pole

Toowoomba ran without a qualifying session. The morning had a single practice session, and the grid was set by a randomised draw, which put the #49 on pole. In practice BR was fifth on a 47.276s, behind ShapeCUT, Force Phantom, Project 5FIVE3 and CASA, two tenths behind CASA, the Sportsman benchmark. With no grid to earn, the morning was about the kart, and the kart was good.

The Race: Four Seasons In Six Hours

Lights out at 10:50 with Thiago aboard from pole. He led the opening lap and settled into third behind the faster Maxx karts, lapping in the 46.9 to 47.3 range. Then, 11 minutes in, the rain came. Over the next six hours the track went from dry to wet, back to dry after lunch, through a late drizzle, and into proper rain again for the final hour. Almost every team spent time on the wrong tyre at some point. BR's race, though, was shaped by two things that had nothing to do with the weather.

Classification from MYLAPS Speedhive. Force Phantom's 152 includes +2 for fastest lap; there was no pole bonus because the grid was drawn. Twomota retired after 303 laps with a loose rear sprocket; a DNF outside the final 15 minutes scores zero. Team Fange's 365 laps include 41 credited after a transponder failure, see below.

Why live timing said P6 and the result says P7. At the flag the screens had BR sixth. Team Fange's transponder stopped reading from about 15:00 to 15:35 while their kart kept circulating, so live timing showed them far behind; race control credited the 41 missing laps after the race, which put #33 seven laps ahead of us. We did not count their laps and we did not contest it: we trust the officials, and these are our mates. It cost three points (125 for P6 against 122 for P7). It also says something about the Fange friendship that our spare set of wets was on their kart that afternoon.

The Incidents: Two In 75 Minutes

Lap 20, 11:05. Five laps into the first shower, still on slicks, Thiago was following #53 when Project 5FIVE3 snapped sideways and spun across the track directly ahead. The onboard camera has the whole thing: the #53 rotating on the wet surface, the gap closing to nothing, nowhere to go. The impact broke a tie rod and bent the steering column. Thiago got the kart back to the pits, and the crew had it rebuilt and back out in 32 minutes 46 seconds. The rain was settling in and the kart was in the paddock anyway, so the team made the call to fit wets before it went back out.

Lap 20, 11:05: #53 spins directly ahead on the wet surface, a split second before contact. A racing incident, nobody's fault. Onboard: BR Motorsport #49

Lap 28, 11:45. Seven laps after rejoining, a second, unrelated failure: all three studs on the rear-right hub sheared and the wheel came off. Thiago pulled onto the infield and walked back to recover the wheel. We do not know the root cause yet. The kart was recovered, the hub repaired, fuel added and Fernando sent out: another 15 minutes 34 seconds.

Lap 28: the rear-right wheel, recovered from the infield after all three hub studs sheared. Root cause still unknown. Onboard: BR Motorsport #49

Was the hub failure caused by the crash? We cannot say. The impact on lap 20 was at the front of the kart, and the steering damage was repaired; the rear-right studs let go seven laps later. Shared root cause or coincidence is an open question, and it is the first thing on the bench before Warwick (see Section 7). Neither incident was driver error.

Timing helped soften the blow, a little. The field had a red-flag stoppage of around five minutes during the first repair, and ran under yellow flags for much of the second, so not every minute in the paddock was a minute lost to the leaders. Even so, Force Phantom completed 28 laps during the collision repair and 12 during the hub stop. BR rejoined the race in last place, 36 laps down on the leader.

Section 4

The Plan B: Cover Ground

Once the kart had been off the track for that long, the target changed from racing CASA to covering as much ground as possible. Three calls shaped the rest of the day.

🌧️ Wets While Stopped
Fit the wets in the paddock
With rain falling and the kart already in for repairs, fitting wets during the crash repair cost almost nothing. It paid off in the 12:50–13:10 window: with Thiago aboard as the track started to dry, BR's median lap of 56.2s was the quickest of all nine teams.
⏱ Stops Where They Cost Least
Make the time loss count
The stops went where each one cost least. Four of the five drive-throughs were banked inside Fernando's dry stint, and the tyre and fuel stop came at the moment the track was ready for slicks. Only the compulsory weights stop was in nobody's plan.
🤝 One Set Of Wets
Lending the spares to #33
BR lent their second set of wets to the Team Fange crew, so when the rain came back at 15:53 the #49 stayed on worn slicks. So did most of the field; tyres were tired everywhere. Thiago's first laps back read 79s, 68s and 63s before the shower eased. It cost a few laps, and we would do it again.
Section 5

Driver Performance

Seven stints: Thiago four (laps 1–28, 75–139, 209–268 and 292–358, about 220 laps), Fernando three (29–74, 140–208 and 269–291, about 138 laps). This round we also have the Alfano 7 logger data for every stint, so for the first time the driver comparison goes beyond lap times to where on the track the time is.

The 46.026s on lap 215 was 0.716s off Force Phantom's fastest lap, and his dry median of 46.42s sat two tenths off CASA's. Brought it home after the final shower.

Took over a kart that had just lost a wheel, in the heaviest rain of the day, and kept it clean for 46 laps. Then a 69-lap dry stint with four drive-throughs, and the start of the late drizzle. Every stint was clean. The wet stint is the clear development area: BR's 12:05–12:45 median was the slowest in the field. The dry gap to Thiago, about 1.6s, is in the corners, not on the straights, see below.

Clean dry laps only, from the kart's Alfano 7 data logger with GPS speed. Sector 1 and Sector 2 are the logger's two timing splits. Thiago's window spans the 15:03 compulsory weights stop.

What the logger says. Fernando's top speed is actually higher than Thiago's, so the time is not lost on the straights. It goes in the corners: his slowest point on the lap is 0.8 km/h slower, and the gap is the same 3.3% in both sectors, so it is spread across every corner rather than one problem bend. That points at minimum corner speed and getting back on the power, not bravery on the straights, and it is exactly the kind of gap that targeted practice closes.

The math, again. Add back the roughly 38 laps lost in the paddock and BR is on about 395, in a fight with GF, ShapeCUT and CASA rather than six laps behind Team Fange. It is a rough reconstruction (some of those laps would have been slow wet ones, and a wets stop was needed anyway), but the shape is the same as every round this year: the pace keeps showing up, and one or two incidents set the result. The engine restart at Cooloola Rd 1, the safety-car restart crash at Warwick, the king pin and ballast at Ipswich, the engine-mount screw at Cooloola Rd 4, and now a spinning kart and three sheared studs.

Championship: P4 Overall, P2 Sportsman

After Round 5, the Taree State of Origin 14-hour, where BR banked 257 points for third among the SEKQLD teams, and 122 more here, BR sits on 919 for the season, P4 overall and P2 in the Sportsman championship. CASA lead the class on 998.5. Team Fange are 13.5 behind on 905.5, and gained only three points on BR at Toowoomba. Recommendations for Rd 7 Warwick

Round 7 closes the season at Warwick on 21 November 2026, followed by the presentation night. Toowoomba's lessons are specific.

🔧 Mechanical Protocol
Find out why the studs sheared
Three studs failing together is not wear, it is a load or a fault. Strip the rear-right hub, inspect the sheared studs and the hub face, and replace every wheel stud on the kart before Warwick. Add stud condition and wheel-nut torque to the pre-race checklist alongside the steering bolts and engine-mount screws, and re-check them after any impact.
🌧️ Wet Running
Wet laps for Fernando
Thiago's laps on wets were the quickest in the field as the track dried, so the kart can do it. The heavy-rain window is where BR lost most. Book wet or damp practice time for Fernando when the chance comes, and carry two sets of wets to Warwick.
📈 Driver Development
Work the corners, use the logger
The Alfano data puts Fernando's dry gap in minimum corner speed, spread evenly around the lap, not in top speed. Overlay his best laps against Thiago's in Warwick practice, pick the corners with the biggest delta, and work on those. Closing the 1.6s dry gap would be worth four to five laps across his share of a six-hour race.
Summary

The Big Picture

Toowoomba could have finished the day in the first hour. A pole from the draw, the lead on lap one, then a kart spinning in front of us in the rain and a wheel off seven laps later: 48 minutes in the paddock before lunch. What followed was the best of this team. Two repairs done under pressure, the right tyre calls, every remaining stop placed where it cost least, a set of wets lent to friends, and a climb from last to P7 overall and P3 in Sportsman. One round left, and BR goes to Warwick P2 in the Sportsman championship and P4 outright.

Thank you, Toowoomba. A huge shout-out to the Toowoomba Kart Club for hosting us at Greer Park Raceway, to the SEKQLD committee, to the officials and clerks who kept a six-hour race safe through rain, dry, rain again and a transponder puzzle at the end, and to the AASA. Special thanks to Revolution Racegear Queensland for their continued support across the series. And a welcome back to Thornton Racing: more than ten years away, on the Come & Try package, at the track they won on a decade ago, and they were properly quick. Massive effort.
